In recognition of National Wellness Month, Lexicon, a 56-year-old steel fabrication and construction company, has introduced a new mental health awareness campaign titled “Strong as Steel: Building Mental Might.” This initiative aims to combat the stigma surrounding mental health, offering employees vital resources and support networks to navigate challenges both at work and at home.
The physically demanding and high-stress nature of the construction industry places unique pressures on workers, leading to significant mental health challenges. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, construction workers are four times more likely to experience suicide than those in other industries, highlighting the critical need for accessible mental health support. Lexicon is committed to fostering a workplace culture where mental health is prioritized and employees are encouraged to seek help without fear of judgment.
“Our employees are our greatest asset, and their mental health is just as important as their physical safety,” CEO Patrick Schueck said. “By promoting mental health awareness across our company and providing easily accessible resources, we are building a stronger, more resilient workforce. We are committed to creating a culture where seeking help is seen as a strength, not a weakness.”
Recognizing the challenges of discussing mental health in a male-dominated industry, Lexicon’s initiative includes a comprehensive internal communications campaign designed to stimulate open conversations, reduce stigma, and promote mental well-being. The campaign will also highlight essential resources available to employees, including:
- On-Site Health Clinic: Located at Lexicon’s Little Rock headquarters, the clinic offers in-person mental health support and connects employees to additional resources.
- Telehealth Services: Available to employees nationwide, Lexicon’s telehealth services ensure access to care regardless of location.
- Employee Assistance Program (EAP): The expanded EAP provides free access to various services, including financial, marriage, and family counseling.
- Expanded Leave Options: Enhanced leave policies allow employees the necessary time to focus on their mental health.
“Lexicon’s ‘Strong as Steel: Building Mental Might’ initiative represents a significant cultural shift within the company,” Chief Human Resources Officer Janell Schmidt said. “We aim to create an environment where mental health is openly discussed and actively supported, ensuring our employees have the resources and support they need to thrive both personally and professionally.”
