The chapter was revitalized in 2022 by Magen Schlesier, AGC Arkansas student chapter liaison and estimator at Lexicon, Inc., along with former chapter president Jill Cates, now a field engineer at Baldwin & Shell. Under their leadership, the chapter created hands-on learning experiences, connected students with industry leaders and provided opportunities to develop essential construction skills. These efforts played a key role in securing national recognition, highlighting the chapter’s strong industry partnerships and expanding network.

Beyond professional development, the chapter’s initiatives have led to career opportunities for members, supported by AGC’s resources, training and networking events.

“The success of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s AGC Student Chapter is a prime example of how emerging chapters can grow their membership and deepen their involvement in the industry,” Spradlin said. “We are excited to see the continued contributions of this talented group of future construction leaders, who are already making an impact at some of the most respected firms in the industry.”

As part of the award, the chapter received a $2,000 cash prize and an invitation to present their achievements at the National AGC Convention in Columbus, Ohio, on April 9. Representatives will include UA Little Rock graduates Cates (Baldwin & Shell), Hunter Cameron (Nabholz) and Matthew Eustace (Lexicon), as well as senior construction management major Harrison Hestir and faculty advisor Stuart Scheiderer.

“The work we’ve done to build relationships between our students and the companies that shape the construction industry is something we’re really proud of,” said Cheyenne Smock, the chapter’s current president. “The work that Jill Cates put in before me and the work I’m continuing will hopefully keep our student chapter among the best in the industry.”

One of the chapter’s most successful events, the 2024 Taste of the South Mardi Gras Cajun Cookoff, underscored its impact. Held in partnership with AGC Arkansas, the festival connected students with local contracting firms in a social setting, leading to job offers and increased membership. The event also raised nearly $5,000 to support student travel to AGC Leadership Development Conferences and the annual National Conference.

“This national recognition highlights the dedication, hard work, and leadership of our AGC students,” said Dr. Hank Bray, chair of the UA Little Rock Department of Construction Management and Civil and Construction Engineering. “Our students have built a strong, engaged student chapter that exemplifies excellence in the field and loves working with our industry partners. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and look forward to seeing their continued impact on the industry.”
